In a fictional paper manufacturing and distribution office, located in a suburb of London, mid-level manager David Brent (played by writer/director Gervais) and his easily distracted staff must welcome a new group of employees following a merger. The rocky transition forms the story line for this innovative docucomedy. Fans familiar with the antics of the assertively incompetent David, cheerful sales rep Tim, annoying team leader Gareth, and wide-eyed receptionist Dawn will enjoy the second season of this Golden Globe Award-winning British import, as will viewers new to the series. Filmed in a combination "fly-on-the-wall" and talking-head documentary style, the six 30-minute episodes center around such commonplace work-life issues as office romances, performance appraisals, fire drills, and motivational training. Outstanding writing and performances explain the popularity of the show although the occasionally scatological and politically incorrect humor will not appeal to all audiences. Extra DVD footage includes deleted scenes, outtakes, and a short video diary.--Linda Frederiksen, Washington State Univ. Vancouver Lib. (c) Copyright 2010.
